After reading through Hobbes’ Internet Timeline, find 5 milestones most relevant to the World Wide Web, screen design, and multimedia design issues – along with the time they happened. List your findings on your WebCT account.


1)1979
On April 12, Kevin MacKenzie emails the MsgGroup a suggestion of adding some emotion back into the dry text medium of email, such as -) for indicating a sentence was tongue-in-cheek. Though flamed by many at the time, emoticons became widely used after Scott Fahlman suggested the use of :-) and :-( in a CMU BBS on 19 September 1982


2)1991
World-Wide Web (WWW) released by CERN; Tim Berners-Lee developer (:pb1:). First Web server is nxoc01.cern.ch, launched in Nov 1990 and later renamed info.cern.ch.


3)1992

First MBONE audio multicast (March) and video multicast (November)


4)1992

Veronica, a gopherspace search tool, is released by Univ of Nevada

5)1993
Mosaic takes the Internet by storm (22 Apr); WWW proliferates at a 341,634% annual growth rate of service traffic. Gopher's growth is 997%.

What role did Tim Berners-Lee play in the development of the Internet?

• He invented the World Wide web including the hyper text system.

In this unit, you will be working with the XHTML scripting language. What scripting languages did Tim Berners-Lee discuss (back in 2000)? Do you feel his comments are still relevant today? What evidence can you find to support your view?

• He discusses xml and RDF (Resourse Description Framework) which offers an offical way of defining 'mening' for data. Yes i believe these scripting languages are still relevent today.

Tim Berners-Lee discusses the world's very first Web page. Visit the site and write your observations on the following: In what ways do you feel Web design has changed over the years, not just in the visual design, but in the hyperlinks? Why do you think his page is so simple? What scripting language did it use? View the source of this page and tell us how many different tags you can find in the code. • Visually the website uses no plugins for graphics, images or video so therefor looks very plain and simple. The Hyperlinks could only scoll within the document. They are now able toscroll between paragraphs within seperate documents or between other web pages.

• He used html scripting.

• I counted 9 different tags

What is the W3C? Why do they care about “standards?”

• The base of the world wide web, HTTP, URL and HTML are goverened by strict standards which need to be reviewed by the w3c continuosly so as to protect itself against fast moving technologies and competition which could fragment and destroy it.

• W3C (world wide web consortium) is the head quarters for the www.

If Tim Berners-Lee could roll the clock back and re-design URLs, how would we type in the address for Curtin University 's Admissions Office (now at http://students.curtin.edu.au/administration/admissions/ )? Why would he do this?
